V.A. - Jazz Venezolano: An Anthology of Jazz Made in Venezuela

Though jazz has been present in Venezuela since the 1920s, the concept of 'Venezuelan jazz' only took shape in the late sixties, when people like Aldemaro Romero, Alberto Naranjo, Benjamin Brea and Gerry Weil started to play a fusion of bossa, jazz and Venezuelan traditional music. This Onda Nueva didn't last, but the use of local elements—lately especially out of the Afrovenezuelan tradition—has become characteristic for Venezuelan jazz.
This CD is dedicated to one of Venezuela's most important artists, Aldemaro Romero, who passed away during its production. The term Aldemareando has come to describe his method, the jazzification of Venezuelan popular genres, the adaptation of local tradition to the universalized musical idiom of jazz. Seven of his compositons are included, and he plays piano on a couple of those.
