FP Barrio Nuevo - Cantare Por Ti

FP Barrio Nuevo offers an innovative exploration of the roots music from the Pacific Coast of Colombia.
Bandleader Francisco Peña, from the port of Buenaventura, is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. He played in some of Colombia's best salsa bands before he migrated to Europe, where he formed salsa band FP La Banda and the more roots-oriented FP Barrio Nuevo.
For many people, cumbia - from the northern Caribbean region - represents Colombian music, but it is only one of its manifold manifestations. On the far-off Pacific shores a similar heritage of slavery and transplanted black culture led to another Afro-Colombian style, the currulao. Like the cumbia, this style also got modernized, adapting new instruments and adopting other musical influences. Its basic 6/8 rhythm is performed on the 'bombo' drum, paired with a shaker called 'guazá.' The abozao is very similar to the currulao, but faster and with more emphasis on the melody. The aguabajo is another song and dance style from the region. As with many ports, Buenaventura is a musical crucible, open to other musical styles. Cuban and Caribbean influences led to the son porteño and calipso chocoano.
Francisco Peña composes his songs in the tradition of these styles, but in the process he is always looking for new means of expression. So enjoy these joyful sounds that blend the best of African, European, Latin American and Pacific traditions!
